My Chloé exploration continues to reconnect the present with pivotal moments from the past that capture the essence and the spirit of this house, in particular the ability to gather a community and a variety of women at its heart. Gaby Aghion did that, and so did Karl Lagerfeld for Chloé. As this journey continues, my aim is to prepare the Chloé woman for different situations and moments.
Karl’s 1970s apartment on Place Saint-Sulpice – an Art Deco-inflected masterpiece that was featured in countless editorials with its signature black, gold and cream color palette – triggered the creative path this season. That place was the hub of so many creative projects, as everything with Karl. Photographers such as Helmut Newton, Deborah Tuberville, Guy Bourdin and David Bailey shoot memorable images there, while Karl’s previous apartment in Saint-Germain- des-Prés, where he started his interest in Art Deco, was where Andy Warhol and Paul Morrissey filmed a movie called “L’Amour” in September 1970. On that occasion, Warhol’s superstars and the Factory crew came to Paris, bringing the New York energy to town. Both apartments were the epicenter of it all. From there, I imagined an encounter of Art Deco opulence and the New York late 1960s set epitomized by Warhol and his acolytes. Freedom, decadence and eccentricity are the bywords. Looking at women such as Donna Jordan, Jane Forth, Viva, Patti D’Arbanville, Edie Sedgwick, as documented in the book “All Tomorrow’s Parties”.
The collection moves along two parallel lines: rich and airy, billowing dresses and blouses in black and gold or white and gold fil coupé evolve seamlessly from the last show, exploring Art Deco motifs and color combinations; meanwhile, the definition of the Chloé wardrobe keeps growing, adding pieces that exude the charm of a personal vintage find. The core elements of this woman’s evolving closet are the tailoring, the jackets with scalloped edges, the leather coats and Bermudas, together with the denim pants and the ribbed knit tops. The color palette features, along with our signature shades of beige, cream and black, new, highly saturated tones of magenta, fuchsia, purple which add to the eclectic spirit, intensely decorated and fringed 70s inspired jewelry completes the looks. Folded boots are a new take on our signature “Cuissardes”, and we introduce our new Chloé sneakers, inspired by the silhouette of boxing shoes and the softness of a ballet shoe.
There is something spirited about this collection that is relatable rather than escapist. The idea is to continue to capture opposites and contradictions in a wardrobe full of joy and freedom, with just a touch of opulence.
