Shot by Juergen Teller and featuring Courtney Love alongside a young and street cast talent, the campaign is an ode to the changing face of the area surrounding Battersea Bridge Road: a dynamic hub pulsating with inspiration
Brace yourself! The new Vivienne Westwood Autumn-Winter 2022 campaign has just landed, turning the evolving streets of Battersea, home to the Maison's studio, into the backdrop of yet another mesmerising shoot. Launched today, the project is lensed by Re-Edition contributor Juergen Teller and graced by the likes of friend of the house Courtney Love. Featuring in the campaign amongst a roster of young and street cast talent, the singer, songwriter and actress described the new collection as “outrageously great, funny and innovative”.
“I’ve always looked up to Vivienne, she did so much more than invent punk. And I adore Andreas — together they are such a mighty force,” she said in a statement released ahead of the campaign launch. Talking about her experience on set, the grunge icon turned house’s muse pointed out how collaborating with Westwood allowed her to fight against “the Instagram filters that are destroying our lives”.
“A genius feminist scholar told me ‘the only truly transgressive act one can do, is to be a woman aging in public’, I knew we would not be using filters and overt retouching,” she said. “When I took Vivienne’s hand I was thinking of Diane Arbus’ ‘twins’ photo but also, taking the hand of a leader who would help me go beyond the retouching that has always tried to turn me into a petite, dainty flower that I’ve never been.”
“I’m honoured these two outlaws asked me,” she added. “I hadn’t worked with Juergen since we did 90s rock and roll together, so that was an added plus. I loved the casting and the collection is just amazing.”
Shot across a range of London locations, including the Royal College of Art’s Design & Innovation Campus and the River Thames Riverbed, Vivienne Westwood Autumn-Winter 2022 campaign explores the transforming face of Battersea — the neighbourhood hosting the fashion house’s headquarters — as it gradually morphs into “the new Bricklane”.
Over the past few years, we have seen the area of Battersea, where we are based, change so much,” said creative director Andreas Kronthaler. “With the RCA moving right next door, there are so many young people and creatives moving to the area. We have got to know them so well, so we decided to shoot where we are based, where everything is born.”
As irreverent and cutting edge as ever, the collection juxtaposes elegant neutrals, eye-catching shades and prints in a playful, extravagant new line of garments. Suspended between fantasy and reality, the protagonists of the shoot take over the streets of Battersea to honour a new generation of world-leading designers, artists and creatives. The result is a captivating campaign that, having at its core Westwood’s fearless, revolutionary spirit, wants to empower the mavericks of tomorrow paving the way for their game-changing ideas.
