Lola’s album begins with the atmospheric, percussive dreamscape of her new single, ‘Good Books’ which features the ultimatum “it’s me or the weed”. The song was premiered as the ‘New Music Daily’ feature on Zane Lowe’s Apple Music show earlier this week.
‘Wish You Were Dead’ is the epitome of chiming, dynamic grunge-pop; meanwhile, Lola’s unapologetic attitude arrives in abundance in offerings ‘Fuck’ and ‘Big Brown Eyes’. Fan favourite ‘Conceited’encapsulates an Arctic Monkeys-esque, indie sleaze groove which has won over crowds from London to Los Angeles.
‘Intrusive Thoughts’ is a sparse, melancholic offering that reflects those unwelcome ways of thinking. ‘You Noticed’ is Lola’s most tender moment to date, with intimate vocals almost whispering over an acoustic guitar. ‘Messy’, which was awarded BBC Radio 1’s Hottest Record on its release, boasts a parade of witty one-liners before an unforgettable statement of a chorus, “And I’m too perfect, so I show you that I’m not / A thousand people I could be for you and you hate the fucking lot”.
‘Crush’ echoes Radiohead’s ‘Creep’ and is an effortless display of Lola’s soaring vocal performance. This Wasn’t Meant For You Anyway rounds off with Lola's intimate spoken word outro.
Through her captivating filmed content and no-nonsense output on life, Lola has won over a new legion of fans spanning both sides of the Atlantic, including the likes of Snoop Dogg, Tyler The Creator, Ty Dolla $ign, Offset, Michael Stipe, SZA, Little Simz and Lily Allen.
Lola recently announced her This Wasn’t Meant For You Anyway UK, Europe & North America headline tour. Kicking off the North American leg in September, she will embark on the UK run this December, which includes a hometown show at Brixton Electric on 10th December. Lola will venture into Europe for a run of headline appearances next February. Currently gearing up for a jam-packed festival season this Summer, Lola will perform at Lollapalooza and Osheaga Festival in North America and will appear at Yung Blud’s inaugural Blud Fest on 11th August and All Points East on 17th August in the UK.
A contemporary break-up album for Lola’s generation, This Wasn’t Meant For You Anywayencapsulates the sound of what it means to be young and in constant romantic chaos. As irresistible as it’s unexpected, This Wasn’t Meant For You Anyway is much like Lola herself: brash, funny, fierce, almost ill-advisedly honest and profoundly South London.
