BURBERRY PROPELS POWER OF SELF-EXPRESSION IN SS22 CAMPAIGN

On Tuesday morning, Burberry revealed its latest campaign, within which it had enlisted a combination of three photographers to shoot. Duo Mert and Marus captured raw studio shots that were contrasted against the candid’s taken by Chris Rhodes, shot backstage during the Spring/Summer 2022 presentations. Each offering a unique viewpoint of the womenswear, styled by Katy England, and menswear, styled by Ib Kamara, collections that embodied the brands core code of ‘duality’ and message of ‘freedom’ within the campaign.

Chief Creative Officer, Riccardo Tisci, said: “The Spring/Summer 2022 menswear and womenswear shows had this visceral energy that was contrasted with really beautiful soundscapes. I wanted to continue this dialogue in the campaign, a flicking between realities, contrasting Mert and Marcus’ pure youthful energy with Chris Rhodes’ raw youthful spirit. As we come out of lockdowns around the world, I wanted this campaign to make people feel something, free to dream, free to feel youthful and alive again. It is a beautiful dance, a very raw energy that’s powerful and full of life. Like an awakening.

A fitting statement as the Spring/Summer 2022 collection encapsulates the power of self-expression through the exploration of “narratives around femininity and masculinity, emphasising fluidity” and “challenge the traditional, iconic silhouettes”. Elements that echoed throughout the campaign creating a youthful and fresh energy.

Since Tiscis arrival at Burberry back in 2018, he has consistently embraced the notion of self-expression and personal identity to make his own mark on the British brand, whilst still referencing codes of the house. So this campaign, and collection, proved no exception. As founder Thomas Burberry once said: “Inherent in every Burberry garment is FREEDOM”, a message that Tisci is clearly intent on propelling forwards through his own vision as we embark into a new sense of the word ‘freedom’ in a post-lockdown world.”
